What happens if I change the email associated with my account?

Overview

Changing the email address associated with your Office Timeline account is a simple process, but there are some things you need to be aware of if an Office Timeline Online license is currently assigned to you or if your account is linked with Microsoft. Here’s what to expect and how to ensure a smooth transition depending on your specific case:

I) I have an Office Timeline Online license assigned

II) My account is linked with Microsoft

I) I have an Office Timeline Online license assigned

If an Office Timeline Online is currently assigned to you and you change the email address associated with your account, your license rights will be revoked for security reasons and the online timeline maker will revert to Free Edition. This means that you will still be able to see all your timelines, but you’ll encounter limitations when updating them or creating new ones.

There’s no need to worry, however, as you can easily regain full access to Office Timeline Online, whether you’re the license manager or someone else is administering the subscription.

a) I am the license manager

If you are the manager of the subscription, you can quickly reassign yourself as a premium user. Here’s how:

  1. Once you’ve confirmed the email change, log in to your account using your new email address.

  2. Browse to the Subscriptions tab on your Account Page, locate your Office Timeline Online subscription and click the Assign licenses button.

  3. Now, enter your new email address to fill the spot left unassigned when changing your account credentials, and then click Assign to regain access to the premium features of the online timeline maker.

b) Someone else is administering my license

Whether you’ve purchased the Office Timeline Online subscription yourself or not, if you are not the license manager of the subscription, you cannot reassign yourself as a licensed user. To regain access to the premium features of Office Timeline Online, please contact your license manager – they should have no trouble assigning a license to your new email address.

II) My account is linked with Microsoft

When you create an account or log in to Office Timeline using your Microsoft account (“Continue with Microsoft”), your two accounts become linked through your email address. Changing your email will break this link because it relies on the original address you used. This means that:

  1. Your old Microsoft credentials will no longer work with your current Office Timeline account. If you try to log in with the Microsoft account associated with the old email address, you’ll be asked if you want to create a new, separate Office Timeline account.
  2. If your Office Timeline account was originally created through Microsoft (and not with a standalone Office Timeline password), you’ll be asked to set up a local password when you change your email address. This is because, once the Microsoft link is broken, we’ll need a local password to verify your identity on future logins.
  3. You can link your new email address with a matching Microsoft account. After confirming the email change, select “Continue with Microsoft” when logging in, and choose the Microsoft account that matches your new email.
